Give Back During The Extraordinary Give

Print

The Extraordinary Give is back! On November 18, Lancaster County will host its largest day of online giving, The Extraordinary Give. The 24-hour marathon of giving will benefit local organizations, including the Power Packs Project.  The Extraordinary Give is a special day where Lancaster County can show support to our local community and give a little extra to those who need it most.

At Power Packs, our goal is to empower families to provide healthy meals so that children come to school well-fed and ready to learn. In order do so, we provide weekend food, recipes and nutritional information to feed insecure families throughout Lancaster County. Your donation, large or small, can help us eliminate hunger in Lancaster County:
$25 can help feed a family of six for two weeks.
$50 can educate and feed five families for a weekend.
$100 can provide weekend food to 40 children.

Together, we can take action to fight hunger in our community! To give a donation during The Extraordinary Give, please visit us online at extragive.org.

Join Power Packs Project, October 7th

Looking to make a difference by helping eliminate hunger in Lancaster County? Join the Power Packs Project, a local nonprofit, at Power Up Kids; An Interactive Event during Lancaster’s First Friday on October 7. At Power Packs we work towards empowering food-insecure families in Lancaster County by providing nutritious recipes, weekend meal packs and education. We are committed to spreading awareness of hunger in Lancaster County. Power Up Kids; An Interactive Event will include information about the Power Packs Project mission, and two interactive activities.

Join us at the Ware Center and the Wells Fargo building in downtown Lancaster on October 7 for our Power Up Kids; An Interactive Event! During the event, participants will build a life-size puzzle of cardboard boxes to reveal a message about hunger in Lancaster County. In an additional activity, participants will sit at a dinner table and be presented with an example of an average meal portion for someone dealing with hunger.

To further heighten awareness of hunger in Lancaster, Power Packs will promote the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Challenge. The Challenge encourages an individual to live on a food budget of $4.00 per day and journal their experience.

“Power Packs has been founded as a community that helps the community. Power Packs sees it as our responsibility to not only support families in need but also to make the public aware of what hunger looks like today,” said Kim McDevitt, Executive Director at the Power Packs Project. “Parents are proud and dignified and doing whatever they can to buy food on whatever little is left over after paying their bills. They want to be able to feed their families a healthy meal. Power Packs makes it possible for them to do that over the weekend and teaches families how to feed their families during the week with easy, low cost nutritious meals. We are excited to call the public to action in a way that educates them first, and then allows them to decide how they will be involved.”

Additional interactive elements of Power Up Kids will be unveiled in the coming weeks. Learn more about the Power Packs Project by visiting powerpacksproject.org.

What is the Power Up Kids Campaign?

ppk_fb_cover_week_1-01

According to the Center on Hunger and Poverty, “Hungry children have a hard time learning in school, have short attention spans and, suffer more absence due to illness.” Here at the Power Packs Project, we work towards empowering food-insecure families in Lancaster County by providing nutritious recipes, weekend meal packs and education. In order to help provide families with the food and tools necessary to give their children a better learning experience, Power Packs has developed the campaign, Power Up Kids!

Power Up Kids is an interactive campaign that informs, engages and inspires thoughtful dialog and collaborative change in Lancaster County and beyond. Featuring powerful public arts pieces, hands-on displays and thought-provoking installations, the Power Up Kids Campaign works to build awareness and promote action. Our goal is to educate the public on hunger and how they can take action.

Look for Power Up Kids banners hanging from the Bulova building on North Queen Street or stop by one of our pin displays! Get involved by taking the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) challenge to understand the difficulties of maintaining a healthy, well balanced diet while living on a SNAP/food stamp budget.

Join Power Up Kids on Friday, October 7 during Lancaster’s First Friday and experience the first installment of our two hands-on displays! Sit at our interactive Dinner Table Project and see what the average meal for someone dealing with hunger looks like. Or come build a life-size puzzle out of cardboard boxes to reveal a message about hunger in Lancaster.

Together, we can take action to fight hunger in our community! For more information on Power Packs or Power Up Kids, please visit www.powerpacksproject.org.
